Kalpetta, the main town in Wayanad, is about 74km from Calicut by road. The drive takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Kera Cabs runs it as a round trip with a car and driver.

Calicut and Kozhikode are the same city. Our booking form lists it as Kozhikode, so pick that as your pickup city.

What the round trip costs

We price Wayanad as an outstation round trip. You pay a day rate for each day you keep the car. Each day comes with 100km of driving. If you drive more than the days allow, every extra kilometre is charged at the rate shown on the card.

Night charge between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am: ₹150.

A two day trip to Kalpetta and back covers about 148km. Two days give you 200km, so the whole run fits inside the allowance. That leaves some room for short drives around Wayanad before anything extra is added.

The day rate covers fuel, the driver and the car. Tolls and parking are extra, paid at actuals. A night allowance is added for pickups between 10pm and 6am.

The road up to Wayanad

After the plains, the road climbs the Thamarassery churam, a ghat section with nine hairpin bends. Traffic often slows on the ghat on weekends and holidays, when lorries and tourist cars queue on the bends.

On empty roads the drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. We plan for about 2 hours 30 minutes, because the ghat is slower than map apps expect. Leave Calicut early if you can.

Going on to Ooty

Ooty is a longer trip. It is about 165.5km from Kozhikode one way, so a two day round trip covers about 331km. That is 131km more than two days allow. Those kilometres are charged at the extra km rate on the card.

Ooty is in Tamil Nadu, so the inter state permit and state tax are also added, at actuals. If you want Wayanad and Ooty together, book three days or more so the drive does not eat both days.

A note from the drivers

Mist and rain can cut visibility on the ghat in the monsoon months, so avoid the climb after dark. Anyone who gets car sick on hairpin bends should sit in front.
